I don't need to tell the aussie readers that it has been hot hot hot around here. And so underwear becomes outerwear. I thought I might pimp some of Owen's daggy singlets as this is now the top of choice on days like this. Going with a woodland theme I used patchwork fabric scraps to make some animals. These were traced onto visofix (I think that's what that iron-on sticky stuff is called) and then I blanket stitched around each one by hand. A relaxing activity to do in the evenings. My sewing space is actually in the entry of our house and as there is no curtains I don't feel comfortable sitting there sewing at night where anyone could spy on me!

I quite enjoy making, I should say embellishing clothes like this. It does have quite a homemade look about it but I don't care. I would rather that than a lot of the graffiti style prints on store bought boys clothes. I have bought a few teeny tiny white onesies for baby #2 and I think I will have to put things like this on the front. I do have a pattern for a onesie now - came in the 'Sewing For Boys' pattern book but I'm not sure if I want to make it just yet. Babies just grow way to fast in those first few months, I probably wouldn't have it finished in time! But, learning how to put plastic snaps in clothes is on my 2013 goal list, so perhaps once I've learned it won't be too hard.
I have seen on a few blogs I follow about joining the
Stashbusting 2013 Sewalong and I realised I inadvertantly just followed the January challenge which was using up the itty bits and tiny scraps from other projects. Hehe this hardly made a dent in the stash! I'm not quite sure if I'm ready to commit to this challenge having another baby this year and all - but maybe I'll join later.
And in other news, fellow Brisbane girl Erin from
i heart fabric has nominated me for the Liebster Award. How lovely! Erin's blog is full of amazing dressmaking. Opening her wardrobe of awesomeness each day must be such a pleasure. If you haven't yet checked out her blog, go and do so right now! I will post a bit more about this award soon.
You hand stitched these?! Ok, I was going to say no way but you're right, some times you need something portable to keep your hands busy and this is perfect. I'm thinking tees/jumpers for my girls with cute animals. Great idea. Hedgehog is my fave. :)
ReplyDeleteI find hand sewing justifies the TV I watch while doing it.
DeleteHow do you find they wash up with the hand stitching?
ReplyDeleteSo far pretty good. They definitely just get chucked in with the wash no special treatment. It's actually some of the patchwork fabric that doesn't fair too well as it gets a bit faded quickly. The edges occasionally get a little frayed but I think that is the perfectionist in me. I just use a double thread blanket stitch and seems to keep it stuck down quite well. I have tried the close zig zag machine stitch but I can't seem to get that looking neat.
DeleteSo adorable. What perfect little creations.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteHey Rosi, these are adorable I love them!! I am going to steal this idea for my little nephew they are sooo cute!!! Thanks for your sweet comments and again you deserve the mention your blog is amazing as well!!
ReplyDeleteA quicker project for your nephew than making clothes from scratch. I bet he's growing way too quickly!
DeleteThey all look awesome! Great idea to jazz up those plain Bonds singlets.
ReplyDeleteLost for words... Absolutely adorable!
ReplyDeleteI love your little animals! They don't look homemade at all, but more specialty children's shop, to me. I'd love to do this with some of my daughter's clothes. Thanks for the inspiration!
