Commencement of home decor sewing

Eastern facing window
Very, very occasionally, I sew something from fabric bought on the same day.  This happened on a Saturday a few weeks ago when, yet again, the sun shone straight through my crappy wooden blinds and woke me up at around 5am.  I was so sick of being woken so early that I drove to Spotlight, bought 10m of sunout curtain fabric, sat down at my machine and busted out a couple of curtains.  Incidentally, there was a curtain rod already installed above the window, so all I had to do was make rod pocket curtains.  There's something deeply satisfying about hemming 2 large rectangles resulting in something extremely practical.  I think I may have made the rod pockets a little small because they don't slide on the curtain rod very well.  But it could be the sticky sunout backing that makes the sliding difficult.  I don't mind tying the curtains back anyway.  Our house was built in the 1920s so it kind of suits the character.  I will one day make proper tie backs with hooks, but they are functioning quite fine with ribbons for the moment.
And curtains closed
These curtains have darkened the room nicely.  Now I just have to make another pair for the French doors in our room including covering up the window above it.  But unfortunately no pre-installed rod on this one.  Then it will be really dark in the mornings.  If only we had daylight savings...

I did sew a few Christmas presents this year but after a very, busy Christmas, including a four day stint at the Royal Children's Hospital, I feel a bit too tired to download the photos.  Stay tuned for the homesewn gift posts in the New Year.

  2. Oh I feel your light pain! My son has an old sheet on the new white wooden blinds but the light peaks in through the side and wakes him way too early. I have to also go to Spotlight while the sales are on and get to it! I so love daylight saving and remember the last time daylight saving was on was Expo 88!! Your curtains look perfect for the job! Happy sleep ins!

    1. I was so desperate I didn't even wait for a Spotlight sale!! Silly I know, but reaping the benefits. It is still reasonable at full price.
